Staff Engineer – Traffic Management | Engineering Platforms

A high-scale Australian product company with millions of users and serious engineering maturity is hiring a Staff Platform Engineer to own and evolve how traffic moves from the internet edge to workloads across cloud and Kubernetes.
  
This is not a ticket-taking platform role. This is set the direction, raise the bar, build the guard rails and frameworks level work.
  
This is for engineers who can code like they build products but want to build the platform everyone else builds on.
  
What You’ll Be Doing:
  
You’ll shape how traffic flows across the stack:

• Secure, scalable, observable traffic patterns across multi-region infrastructure
• Service mesh and ingress strategy across multiple clusters
• Platform routing, auth, policy and visibility models
• Self-service capabilities that product teams actually enjoy using
• Automation and Infrastructure-as-Code patterns that remove friction, not add it

  
Your work becomes the paved road hundreds of engineers build on.
  
This role is heavily focused on developer experience. You’ll design and run the systems that route every request, and your decisions will directly impact how hundreds of engineers deploy and operate their services.

You have made platform decisions that affected multiple teams and held up over time.
  
You likely bring:

• Deep Kubernetes experience including architecture, scale, and reliability
• Real Istio or service mesh production experience in multi-tenant environments
• Strong Terraform, Helm, and GitOps capability for everything-as-code
• Software engineering strength – you build tooling and automation, not just infrastructure
• A track record improving platform experience for developers through self-service tools and sensible defaults
• Staff or principal level technical influence – leading architectural discussions and mentoring engineers
• Calm judgement in complex distributed systems with high availability requirements

Bonus points for contributions to CNCF projects, multi-tenant cluster experience, or CKA certification.
